Then, when you’re ready to explore farther out, you have so many options. The closest entrance to Olympic National Park is also one of the least crowded, the Staircase Entrance at Lake Cushman. You can hike the Staircase Rapids Trail in near solitude.

Or within two hours you can be at the Olympic National Park Visitor Center in Port Angeles, planning a hike through the Hoh Rainforest or a drive up Hurricane Ridge Road for stunning views of the Olympic Range peaks. Less than two hours the other direction, you can be hiking through meadows covered in wildflowers under Mount Rainier’s impressive face, Washington’s only 14,000-foot peak.

You can also head to Seattle for the day and explore the Space Needle and Pike Place Market in addition to countless amazing coffee shops and restaurants. A major plus of basing out of Gig Harbor? Leave your rig parked at your campsite and drive your passenger vehicle to avoid battling Seattle’s notorious traffic in an RV. Or, skip traffic all together and take the Bremerton to Seattle ferry which will drop you off in the heart of Seattle at Pier 52. The Bremerton Ferry Terminal is just under 30 minutes from the resort.

Don’t forget about the ferries. From the peninsula, you can hop on a ferry with or without your vehicle and head across the waters of Puget Sound to Victoria, B.C. (don’t forget your passport) or Whidbey Island, a charming island community that can also connect you to the rest of the islands of Puget Sound.

One of the best perks of staying at Sun Outdoors Gig Harbor? It’s pet friendly. That means you can bring your dog to Olympic National Park, which is one of the few national parks that allows your furry friend to explore more than the parking lot.
